Oil comes up at the Dip Stick, (Silver, 1 October 2002 )
Hi, hope you can help me. My problem is that oil is squirting out at
the dipstick. I have checked the breather tube and it is functioning.
Oil comes out of the return pipe but there is still too much pressure
in the crank case. I also think there is too much oil on top of the
pistons.
The engine is basically reconditioned; new piston rings, new con rod
bearings, new crank shaft bearings, new valve guides. Could I have missed
a canal somewhere, that mayne is blocked? I need some advice to come
to grips with this problem. The machine starts easily but I am not game
to let it run for too long before I have located the source of my problem.
Before I put everything together again could someone advice me what
would be a good jointing compound to apply to cross sealing rings and
rubber push rod tunnel seals.
At what angle should the inlet valve sit? I have it a 45 degrees which
apparently is incorrect, can it be damaging for the engine?

Silver, Thanks for your feedback.
Interceptor owners is not a large group of people, even when looking
world wide. In order to share your concerns, I'm afraid your questions
need to be in English. (Silver's feedback originally in Swedish)
From your description I guess there could be several things. You've
mentioned the breather tube. Have you tried the workshop manual? It's
available on-line at http://www.ozemate.com/interceptor/wm.htm
(or follow the menu from the button which says Pit) specifically it
will take you to
Oil System
Which shows the oil system where you need to have correctly operating
preasure valves.
Have you taken a proper compression test. This phenomena sometimes
happens with old engines. Instead of properly compressing, the pressure
slides down the piston, creating a compresion chamber underneath (i.e
in the crank case).
Then on the way down, if the cylinders are worn, oil could be pressed
up from the sump up on top on the piston.
My first advice is check compression against specifications in workshop
manual.
If compression is inadequate, dismantle cylinders and inspect for wear
as directed in workshop manual. If necessary bore to oversize and source
new pistons and rings from Hitchcock
Secondly, when you assemble new rings I believe they are marked to
go with a certain part up.
If compression is ok, have a mechanic check oil pressure in the various
sections of the lubrication system as shown at http://www.ozemate.com/interceptor/wm.htm
Hope this helps. Royal
Oil channel screws or? 2 October 2002 11:38 AM
Hi guys.
Kickan (my wife) renovating a -69 MkII (I work away) is puzzled about
two screws in the crack case, whose heads face backwadrs, screwed into
the crackcase horizontally in direction of Bike travel , just beneath
, next to where the oilfilter sit, not accessable when gearbox in place.
See illustration (horizontal) no 29, one on top of the other at the
exploded engine view
http://www.ozemate.com/interceptor/me2.htm
left middle in picture.
Are these access/cover screws for the oil channel? Main purpose. Anyone
know?
Regards
Royal
Hi Kickan and Royal
Jes, Royal, you've got it right. Those countersunk Unbracko's are merely
plugs for drillings that are functional on the forward side of the filter-well.
Best just leave them be. I've never found any muck behind them and they
are Loctitened in place.

When Bike is Cold Oil comes out from the area around the oil
filter.
Message: I a-m w-riting on behalf of a friend who does not have access
to email. he owns a 68 1/2 TT Interceptor with about 45,000 miles on
it. He would like to know if someone might be able to give him some
information about a problem he's been having lately. When the bike is
cold, oil comes out from the area around the oil filter. Once it's warm,
the problem seems to go away.
Dan Neff, Vancouver Canada
If this is a Series II engine, I suggest checking the two relief valves
that are mounted vertically on the top of the crank case, just behind
the oil filter housing. I have had these come loose from time to time.
Also, the gaskets on the relief valves may have hardened and are not
making a good seal. Another area to check is the rocker feed tube. I
have had to sliver solder the oil pipe for the rockers back into the
fitting on the end of the oil pipe. And I have has to replace the gasket
on the oil pipe fitting where it screws into the crankcase. All of these
things are right in behind the oil filter and it may be hard to tell
which one is leaking.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone know the maximum play permitted on big ends? I have just
had a 10thou. regrind and have nearly 4thou. play on the timing side
and 2.5 on the drive side. Rebuild presently halted which is a bummer
as SWSBO is working this weekend!! (anyone with specs on this?)

Great Site!
Thanks for the effort producing a very fine sire for RE's. I had a
1960 Coopers Interceptor (VAX engine) its now with my oldest son. Currently
have a 1968 1/2 Intercpetor I, next in line for a comeback. I was a
REOCNA officer for a few years, treasurere and subscriptions.
Keep up the good work,
I'm not sure of the frame number, and the engine number was removed.
Here's the story behind that. I met the owner about 4 years ago. Both
of us were between positions. In Telecom that means out of work. When
he was younger he had a number of different jobs and once worked in
a cycle shop, in the mid 70's. This RE was there, in pieces and of course
not running. He put thing together and got it
to run. Time went by and he collected a few other bikes. When we met
I gave
him details of my restorations so he decided that the RE deserved a
better
fate and offered it to me, for free. In his process of rebuild, the
titling
papers were lost so he had the bike titled with a home made ID plate
with
TEX102767 stamped on it. The number part may be the
original frame number.
So now it sits in my air conditioned shop waiting its turn. Best Regards

Stanchion length on Series 2 Interceptors.
I want to know something about fork stanchion length on Series 2 Interceptors.
Are the stanchions the same length as Norton Commandos?

Hi Mitchell
Thanks for your feedback
What's a stanchion?
Please indicate illustration number on exploded views on the web site

R'U gonna put an Interceptor Front End on your Bullet?
Generally speaking. It's a Norton Commander Front End on the Interceptor
Series II
so, "Are the stanchions the same length as Norton Commandos"
I believe to be true, but I'll verify when you've indicated
part

Thanks for your reply. The stanchion is the steel fork leg. On Commandos they are 23 1/2" long.
Royal Enfields own steel fork legs were 22 1/2" long
