The Moeraki Boulders, on our way to Dunedin, with a dozen or so boulders right on the beach; large as cars, totally round with distinctive patterns, was truly a wonder of nature.
Scottish
Dunedin impressed with the steepest street in the
southern hemisphere and a massive harbour inlet which
we travelled the 30-40 k out on the peninsula on very
winding and narrow roads along the cliff face to camp
at Portobello.
Further out we took the Albatross tour, seeing Albatrosses
nesting with little chicks and others showing off
their impressive wingspan right above us.
Several hundred meters up on the peninsula was a Scottish
castle with some great views and scary corners. Highly
recommended part of NZ.
A costal scenic route to Invercagill and we saw the
southmost FiA motor racing circuit in the world, a
legacy after Burt Munro (The worlds fastest Indian).
Our Ulysses Friends Max and Jill took us to the south
cape (Bluff) and showed us around Invercagill, plus
gave us very warm hospitality and tips for our holiday.
The actual Burt Munro motorcycle and fairing, as well
as the double used in the movie were on display at
Hammers hardware, not the museum!
Another scenic cruise took us to Doubtful Sound –
Lake Manapouri, Te Anau and a cute backpacker cottage
for two nights. We had a long lake boat ride in Te
Anau to the Glow worm caves with narrow cave walks
and a small rowing boat trip inside the cave to get
really close to the glow worms above our heads.
