Farewell Spit till Blenheim,
Kaikora, Lewis Pass, Christchurch,
Akeroa, Arthurs Pass, Otira Viaduct Lookout
Our return trip went via Richmond and Nelson with
a stop at an impressive Suspension Bridge. We headed
down the east cost through Blenheim and Kaikoura,
and pulled up to check out the wild seals along this
fantastic route, so close to the ocean.
The 'warning for seal' road signs were unique and
the tunnels were chipped in the upper corners from
trucks going through.
Lewis Pass fitted into our schedule and with a visit
to Hanmer Springs loaded with another scenic overdose
from this cruise, we headed straight to Christchurch
for some comfy accommodation for three nights.
We
found a great cabin to hire at $65 per night, fully
equipped and rather close to Christchurch CBD. We
grabbed it for three nights, to finish off our NZ
adventure in comfort.
The French Village of Akaroa was the target next day
and when we thought we'd seen it all, we turned euphoric
about the roads and views out there.
Akaroa
had their own local beer too. French names were seen
everywhere, even the tricolour was fluttering in the
wind.
On this the last day cruising, we couldn't help ourselves
but needed another alpine pass, so up to Arthur's
pass and Otira Viaduct Lookout for some final alpine
roads and views.
That was the last leg of our "best of the best"
cruising holiday in New Zealand.
Next day we spend meticulously cleaning the bike;
camping gear and trailer for Australian re-entry,
then went shopping and touring around Christchurch.
It was the trip of a lifetime and we can really relate
to every corner of New Zealand now. All 8915 k of
it. What a life experience to hover around New Zealand
and experience the entire country like this, nature,
people and animals. One could spend a month just in
Milford sound, but this was a holistic grab of New
Zealand continent context, and all its colours and
contours.
New Zealand will now always be with us.
Now when we know our
way around, we'll be back for special selective experiences.
There is so much to pick from.
